  Privacy Statement

We collect information from visitors to our website for four reasons:

  • To get your feedback,
  • To better understand the makeup of our audience,
  • To be able to respond to your questions, and, most of all,
  • To enable you to share your thoughts and achievements with others.

We care about the privacy and safety of our visitors. For that reason, we do not sell or otherwise make available personally identifiable information to any person or organization. This includes information such as last names, email addresses, street addresses and phone numbers.

GSEM respects the privacy of every individual who visits our website. This Notice outlines the information that may be forwarded to GSEM, via our website and how our Council will collect and use any such information that is transmitted to us.  This Notice also will instruct you on how you can verify the accuracy of your personally identifiable information submitted to us and how you may request that we delete your personally identifiable information from our databases.

Information about Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts’s South Region Website
GSEM produces a South Region website that has several purposes:

  • To provide information to our girl members, including information about Girl Scout programs and activities,
  • To provide information to adults interested in Girl Scouting within our service area, including adult leadership and training opportunities, and
  • To make registration for Girl Scout activities in our area available over the internet.

It is not necessary to register for Girl Scout membership or activities by means of our website. Registration is available by hard copies sent by mail or hand delivered to Girl Scout local volunteers.  Registration by means of the website is offered as a convenience to our constituency.  Please call our office number listed above if you would prefer to register by a method other than this website.

Membership in Girl Scouting is available to all girls ages 5-17 and to all adults.  The only membership criterion is acceptance of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.  The annual membership fee is $10.

Personally Identifiable Information
The information gathered by GSEM to register a person (girl or adult) for membership is limited to only such data as is necessary to satisfy the registration requirements of Girl Scouts of the USA or particular program needs of our Council.  Such information includes:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Telephone Number
  • School Grade
  • Birthdate
  • Parent or Guardian Names and Business Telephone Numbers
  • Emergency Contact Name and Telephone Number
  • Race, ethnicity
  • Information about any Disability

Registration via the website is a voluntary process.  As noted above, registration may be processed by other means.  Once registered as a Girl Scout member, registration for particular Girl Scout program activities may include and duplicate some of the same information identified above.

Use of Personally identifiable Information
GSEM is chartered by Girl Scouts of the USA.  Our charter obligates us to perform various services, including gathering information necessary to register a girl or adult for Girl Scout membership.  Actual registration as a Girl Scout member is granted by Girl Scouts of the USA.  GSEM obtains information and transmits it to Girl Scouts of the USA.

GSEM and Girl Scouts of the USA will store and process your or your child’s personally identifiable information in their registration databases.  Neither GSEM nor Girl Scouts of the USA will give or sell your personally identifiable information to any outside organization under any circumstance.  Your information may be shared with agents or volunteers for GSEM in connection with services these individuals or entities perform for our Council, but only on an “as needed” basis related to specific Girl Scout activities sponsored by our Council.

Security
GSEM and Girl Scouts of the USA are committed to keeping secure the data you provide us. We will take reasonable precautions to protect your personally identifiable information from loss, misuse or alteration. Agents or volunteers for GSEM who have access to your personally identifiable information in connection with providing Girl Scout services to you or your child are required to keep the information confidential and are not permitted to use this information for any other purpose than to carry out the services they are performing for GSEM or Girl Scouts of the USA.

Parental or Guardianship Consent
When personally identifiable information is gathered at our website for a child under the age of 17, a parent or guardian’s consent is required for our collection, use and/or disclosure of such information. The Federal Trade Commission regulations require parental consent when information is gathered about a child under the age of 13. GSEM and Girl Scouts of the USA obligate themselves to obtain such consent for any child under the age of 17.

Should the parent or guardian of a child wish to permit the collection of personally identifiable information via GSEM’s website but not consent to our disclosure of this information to Girl Scouts of the USA, it will be necessary for the parent or guardian to make use of an alternate method to register a child for Girl Scouting.  As noted above, use of our website to register a person as a member of Girl Scouts of the USA is purely voluntary and registration may be accomplished by other means.

Mechanism for Parental or Guardianship Consent
GSEM is obligated by federal regulation to obtain verifiable parent or guardian consent to the collection, use, and/or disclosure of personal information from children. These regulations state that “consent must be reasonably calculated to ensure that the person providing consent is the child’s parent” or guardian.

As noted above, registration for membership in Girl Scouting requires a $10 annual fee.  In addition, registration for a GSEM program usually also involves a fee. GSEM has determined that payment of this fee by means of a credit card will constitute parental or guardianship consent.

Deletion or Change of Personally Identifiable Information
If you have submitted personally identifiable information through GSEM website and you would like to have that information changed or deleted from our database, please contact us via email or send a letter to our Membership Manager at the address provided above. We will then use reasonable efforts to remove your or your child’s personally identifiable information from our files or change such information as you request.  You may also contact us through any of the above methods to request the personally identifiable information that GSEM has collected about you or your child through its website.  GSEM will use reasonable efforts to supply you with this information and correct any factual inaccuracies in this information.
