Getting Started - FAQs for New Leaders

Welcome to the biggest, best organization for girls in the world!  Thank you for volunteering to become one of your troop's leaders.  The time you spend in Girl Scouts will bring you joy and satisfaction as you watch girls grow in the program.  Your leadership will help them to become productive young women.

What's a troop?
A Girl Scout troop is a group of girls and adults who work together to plan and conduct weekly meetings, group activities and short and sometimes long trips that blend into the Girl Scout program. Daisy Girl Scouts is for girls in Kindergarten.  Brownie Troops have girls in grades 1-3, Junior Troops have girls in grades 4-5, and Teen Troops are divided into age groups 11-12 and 13-17, and sometimes combined. Family adults join troops with their children.  Soon you will meet your fellow troop volunteers, receive a list of girls in the troop and decide on a meeting time and location. Each troop draws on the talents and interests of the girls and the volunteers. Your troop will reflect you and your commitment. Each troop is designated by a number.

What's a Level Manager?
A member of the professional staff dedicated to providing services and support for troop volunteers.  Your Level Manager will contact you, and you will be able to get all the help, advice and resources that you need for your troop from her.

What's the Service Center?
The Service Center is a building in Middleboro, owned by the council.  It houses the administrative offices, professional staff and Museum of Girl Scouting of Southeastern Massachusetts, and hosts numerous programs and special events for adults and girls throughout the year.

What's the Resource Center?
The Resource Center, at the Service Center, is the council’s collection of equipment, books and materials that are lent and given to volunteers to help them develop an excellent program for their troops.  It includes everything from compasses and backpacks to skeletons and language tapes to TVs, VCRs and computers.  The selection includes books about Girl Scouts, girl development and activities on every topic. There are songbooks, tapes, troop meeting plans and patch programs.  Visit the Resource Center often!

What are product sales?
You are probably familiar with our most famous product sale (probably the most famous and popular product sale in the world!) -- the annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale. This is your troop's prime opportunity to earn money for program activities.  Girls participate in our Fall Sale also.  It consists of the Be A Reader magazine sale and a nuts and candy sale.  Girl Scouts earn and manage the money from these, and they learn selling, marketing, math, speaking and management skills.
