About Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts

What is a Girl Scout council?
We are in the process of merging into Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts with our neighboring councils, Patriots' Trail and Spar and Spindle.  More ...

A council is a non-profit organization chartered by Girl Scouts of the USA that is responsible for Girl Scouting within a certain geographic area. The territory of Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts stretches from Franklin in the northwest to Marshfield in the northeast and all the way south, including Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.  We are a non-profit corporation in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

What makes up the council?

“Who” is more accurate. The council is every girl and adult who has registered as a member of Girl Scouts of the USA and lives in GSCSM’s territory. There are approximately 13,500 girl and 3,800 adult members in southeastern Massachusetts. Among the adults are members of the Board of Directors, members of the Nominating Committee, the staff and the hundreds of volunteers who work with troops, and the delegates they elect to represent their views on matters of council policy. We also have many adults who maintain membership in the organization and loyally contribute to it because they believe that our mission is important to the development of youth.

Why does the council exist?

We exist to offer the Girl Scout program to every girl from age 5 to age 17 who lives within our territory. This includes coordinating the large volunteer structure that actually delivers the program, providing equipment and materials and ownership and maintenance of the land and buildings comprising our camps. GSCSM owns five outdoor program centers.  Another responsibility of the council’s adults is raising funds through donations to support programming, property management and the council’s operation. The council can carry out its mission to girls and troops only if it is in good financial condition as a body. Our income is a combination of profit from product sales, investments and donations by member families and adults outside the organization who value its existence.
